A few weeks ago, we looked at how to build donut charts in Tableau. Once you’ve got the basics of building a donut down, the natural next question is, how do you get it looking really great?
This question comes up frequently in my classes. Often, it’s the way we format our charts that makes the biggest impression on our end users. While this week’s video pertains to donut charts, I hope that it holds some tips and tricks for adding layers of interest into our other views and charts too!
In this video, we're going to add a dynamic color palette and swap our dimension with a parameter to really take our donut charts to the next level.
Keys to building a Dynamic Color palette
Add Measure Values to the color tab on the marks card
Use separate color legends for Measure Values
Use the advanced color features to set your mid-point
Keys to building a Swap a Field Parameter
Use a String-based parameter
Connect your parameter to a calculated field
Replace the field on the Rows or Columns shelf with your new calculated field
You can access and download the Tableau Workbook from the video here.
